Siena and San Gimignano Itinerary

The tour starts in Florence. Along the way to Siena, the tour first step is  the renowned  medieval village of San Gimignano, a small and world famous walled town located on a hilltop.
San Gimignano remained intact through the centuries. The village is characteized by its unsual skyline composed of tall medieval towers. Here the tour escort accompaigns the group into the heart of the village historical center, where visitors can enjoy some free time to stroll around and for some shopping.

The group moves then to Siena. After a free time for lunch (not included), the group meets the local, official guide, for the tour of Siena historic center. The tour stars from Siena most beautiful square, Piazza del Campo where the Palazzo Pubblico (Town Hall) is located. Ther square is well-known for its great dimensions, its unsual shape, for the local artisans shops and for the Gaia Fountain. From Piazza del Campo, the group starts a pleasent walking tour through the narrow medieval streets of the city, flanked by splendid palaces and historic shops and reaches the Museum and Oratory of a Palio’s Contrada.

The “Contrade” (name of the districts into which the city is divided) are the real heart of Siena social life, where inhabitants of each district compete with each other during the famous Palio horse-race.
The Museum of a ”Contrada”, as well as its Oratory, is therefore the heart of the district. It is an intimate and secret place containing historical documents and wonderful relics of the famous Palio, as well as magnificent works of art, which are normally not disclosed to the public.

Finally the group visits Siena spectacular Cathedral dated back to the 12th century and its magnificent architecture and polychrome marbles.
In the afternoon, the tour continues to
Monteriggioni, an amazing small medieval village enclosed by its famous walls, which remained standing to this day. The group has free time to visit Monteriggioni.
Then crossing the gently Chianti rolling hills, the group stops and visits a local Winery to enjoy four fantastic wine tasting and sample balsamic vinegar and “zero food miles” products.
This is the last stop of this itinerary and the group goes back to Florence.

(*) When the Museum and the Oratory of the Contrada are not accessible, they will be replaced by another site of historic and cultural interest.
