To truly experience the magic and mystery of the Colosseum, take a tour of the ancient Roman amphitheater at night, after the crowds have gone home and the busy city life has slowed. Walking through the hallways of the 1st century structure, illuminated with help by the light of the moon, is a tour few have the chance to experience and is one of the most unique opportunities in Rome.
The Colosseum is considered one of the greatest architectural accomplishments of the Roman Empire. Completed in 80 AD, the structure was commonly used to host gladiator events, and the even today one can imagine the energy and excitement that filled the stands so many years ago. On the night tour, an expert guide will take you around the amphitheater and will highlight important areas of history and the building itself.
After viewing the arena, visitors will go underneath the structure and see the Hypogeum, an area of the Colosseum used to hold the gladiators and animals. This area was recently reconstructed in 2010 and entrance is difficult to obtain without a pre-reserved ticket. Do not miss out on this tour!
It is important to remember that the “Colosseum Under the Moon” tour is only available on Thursdays and Saturdays from May 5th to October 6th. The tours run for 1 hour 15 minutes between 8:30pm and 10:00pm. Tours are offered in English.
