The building was built in 1300 and it is supposed to be a monastery and a parish church. It has hosted a Dominican religious community until 2014, when they joined the friars of Santa Maria Novella.
In the museum the visitor finds the works of Beato Angelico, an important Tuscan painter who was sanctified by Pope John Paul II in 1984 because of the religiousness of its paintings and the humility of its personality, as far as we know from the literature about him.
In order to understand the importance of this painter we remind that one of its painting, the Annunciazione, is exposed at the Prado Museum in Madrid.
The building itself is a work of art of Michelozzo, an important Florentine architect who lived the Florentine Renaissance and made the project for other important buildings such as Palazzo Medici Riccardi or Villa Medici.
The church was for a brief period the home of Fra’ Girolamo Savonarola, who lived here for a brief period before harshly criticizing the richness and sumptuousness who the Florentine flaunted.
The building has always been the house of the Dominicans until the Napoleonic Wars stripped the church from them. Successively it became a possession of the State.
As you can guess, this museum has a lot of Florentine history to tell so as many wonderful paintings which you won’t find anywhere else.
